The internal codenames for Mario games are sometimes quite creative. The codename for Paper Mario: Sticker Star, "554g", is an elaborate bilingual pun that requires deciphering it into Japanese and then translating the sentence into English to understand.

Puns are supposedly the lowest form of comedy but what I'm seeing here is essentially an encoded joke requiring multiple steps to get.

It's like if a clown gave you a small puzzle box that hides a tiny pie inside for you to smack into your own face.

If only the game itself was this creative

It's interesting to learn that Sticker Star was initially envisioned as a Paper Mario game, given that the final release had nothing to do with the series whatsoever

I should’ve expected people being mean about the game and not opened the comments 😔

Too bad some of us bought the game with our own money and hated it.

No, I got mine while playing the game and it's just bad lmfao. And I do like Color Splash despite it's many flaws like the stupid roshambo temples while I have never really played the original first 2 Paper Mario games. I did play Super Paper Mario and loved it though!

They could have not given this much of damn about something as trivial as a codename of a video game but they did.

I see others have already taken the opportunity to say Sticker Star is a bad game, so I'll pile on. Sticker Star is a bad game

Actually it's a reference to the fact that Mario weighs exactly 554 grams.

I think I'm more confused seeing 4時 being read as shiji instead of yoji.

That’s really neat!
Do you have any more examples of creative codenames for other games??

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is "Million", referring to the many Luigis. But later Mario games have a custom of including "red" in the codename. So Mario & Luigi: Brothership is "Vermillion", which manages to connect "red" and "million" in an unexpected way! Thank you very much for your inquiry!

I find this amusing and intriguing much like parts of this game when I finally got to play it and beat it this year.

Learning specific things about it and the battle system that I didn't already know was a fascinating time~

(Gonna specify that I'm being 100% serious & enjoyed my time with the game overall.)

(This ain't an invite to debate, it's for others who also sooner like the game to see that others do enjoy it. Like a lil light in a tunnel, ya know?)

People (understandably) give this game a lot of shit but things like this remind me that people do care about making games even if they aren't that good

As sakurai says: “no one tries to make a bad game.”

Indeed, Sticker Star was clearly made with care. Though, when I played it I felt that the development team didn't have the time to completely finish the game and add hints to help the player progress. That felt like the biggest missing piece, as the rest was nearly there.

That's very interesting. But, with my extensive knowledge of Japanese, which is zero, I must say that my head hurts. Thank you. 🤦🏾‍♀️

The pun works before translating it into English. I don’t understand why it is bilingual.

The pun relies on the fact that in English, the phrase "4 PM" has a "P" and "M" for it, for "Paper Mario". The Japanese phrase 午後四時 does not have anything that references Paper Mario, like any P or M sounds. As such, the English translation step is necessary. I hope I was able to explain this!

With a codename as crafty as that I wonder how good the writing must be!
