Ideas of masculinity also play a role. Job growth is for teachers, social workers and nurses. The first two don't pay well; they're all jobs that include care giving.

Related fact, "women's" professions (teaching, social work, nursing) have unpaid practicums. "Men's" professions (engineering, business) have paid co-ops.
