Reasonable policies that could prevent tragic gun deaths in a realistic fashion? Nah, we have to eschew all that for the pie in the sky dream of removing all guns from planet earth.

I think a lot of people assign some kind of animist properties to firearms the same way the Norse did with specific swords. They stop being inanimate objects in their minds and become a personified class of enemy to be fought.
