Lucifer is probably a shining example of one of Hazbin's core themes: punitive justice and public shaming doesn't work. It only stops "bad" behavior because it leaves an exhausted shell, often with worse behavior that will take ages to heal from

Heaven very much ensured that Hell would be a self-fullfilling prophesy by punishing Lucifer the way they did

If Lucifer was a more vengeful man, if they hadn't succeeded in beating him down long before mankind was even a concept, in making an example of him. They'd be fucked.

And they're really fucking lucky that his healing process will hoist him out of his spiral WITHOUT making him vengeful.

Lucifer's depression and projected self hatred is a side effect of being shunned and admonished for an unfathomable amount of time. Heaven drilled into him that He is the problem, and when people are excessively punished, they equate their pain with accountability.

Self loathing and self harm become tools they use as attempts to appeal for forgiveness and to wash themselves of the painful shame that being "in trouble" makes them feel. This behavior is an appeasement tactic that doesn't solve any problems caused, in fact it creates MORE problems.

Absolute truth, im loving how it shows punitive justice does nothing

Punishing people only breaks them and makes them self-punish or seek out punishment when they're told/ when they think they've done wrong because that's all they know. That's what will make things better, what will make THEM better, even though it's only making EVERYTHING worse.
