I do not believe for a second that Trump decided to show mercy for the Iranian people. Someone (with half a brain) must have told him he'd be prosecuted for a war crime and he might spend the rest of his pathetic life in a prison.

I don't think he cares about war crimes either, considering the other things he's guilty of (according to FBI evidence). I think the fact that top-rank military brass are increasingly telling him to go fuck himself even AFTER Whiskey Pete's Big Purge is what's fueling Trump's attempt to save face.
