I’ve never heard of the second one, which I assume must be a weird made-up American version given out at places like Yale.

But I’m a curmudgeon. I don’t acknowledge the JD as a real degree. Proper law degrees are only ever an LLB and possibly a BCL, like God intended. I say this knowing that even McGill, where I went, has gone soft and now calls its common law degree (at least) a JD.

My LLB is U of Toronto (1984). Several years later I was offered the option of converting to a JD, which I took, because I understood that in the U.S. the LLB was associated with junior colleges while the JD was given out by universities. Weird, since I never planned to practice in the U.S.
