I don’t think Trump’s internal calculus, to the extent he even has one, considers the interests of others at all—not America/Americans, not Israel, not even his own kids. Netanyahu and Putin both steer him very effectively, but that’s by persuading an idiot, not out of any sort of moral solidarity

I think that's a silly idea that fails to explain his actions. He knows being pro-Israel is harmful to his poll numbers and prospects for continued political support as shown by how he manipulated Biden’s Israel support in the election. He believes in supporting Israel and adds that to his calculus.
