Personally I think their overall perfect status is a racist corrupt Southern mill town of 1904: pretty much no federal govt, no regulations, no income taxes, no voting rights, sheriff runs things on behalf of the mill owner, no infrastructure, no unions, and medicine is quacks & snake oils.
