Which way is north? The geographic North Pole is a fixed spot. But magnetic north is another story; it's where lines of the magnetosphere converge, and Earth's magnetic field is hella dynamic. Every 5 years, scientists revise the model for magnetic north & they recently released its latest update 🧪

True. The magnetic poles have been moving ever since the Hadean when they formed, which fortunately for us protects us from all sorts of nasty space radiation.

Friendly request: please avoid the trap of the unnamed "scientist they." Give credit.

From the link: "The World Magnetic Model is jointly developed by NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) and the British Geological Survey (BGS)."

(excellent link, thanks!)

GPS-based navigation instruments orient me and my boat.

The beautiful compass which sits just forward of the steering wheel of my sailboat is essentially a decoration.

There's a reason why Canada labels its runways to geographic north, and it's because magnetic north is a wobbly little bitch.

canada's Southern Domestic Airspace set its runways to magnetic throughout my flying career. northern domestic was true , and often our charts up there referred to grid north just to save confusion
