oh yeah, itβs LGBTQ people. The idea was introduced by Susannah Heschel shlita in the 80s I believe. Just as you spit out the seeds and drink the juice of an orange, so too we removed the aspects of our tradition which are hateful and keep the sweet aspects for all.
later people said βit was some old rabbi who said βa woman belongs on the bimah as much as an orange belongs on the seder plateββ which is not only trite, it also erases a womanβs voice in the process of erasing the LGBTQ experience
The best thing to ever happen at a Seder was when my kid brought her girlfriend, and in effect coming out to the rest of the family. She wanted to put an orange on the Seder plate and volunteered to read about the symbolism.
