The movie is so close to being good. It’s mostly a lot of little things that drag it down for me. Like Beers, I love his character, but his shoehorned connections to Freeza and the Saiyans are so contrived, along with a prophecy being the inciting incident and his reason to fight Goku.

The Pilaf Gang adding nothing to the film. You can literally cut all their scenes and it wouldn’t change a thing.

Goku being arrogant, so he can be humbled by Beers and admit defeat, to fabricate character development. Goku actually giving up just feels antithetical to his character.

Then there’s a bunch of (admittedly nitpicky) narrative papercuts throughout, coupled with everything else that makes it underwhelming.

Though I think Super told the story worse, it made a lot of small changes that I really liked. So, fingers crossed this Kai edit will be a version I really like.

Except for the comedy, which, despite what people think/want, is a big part of Dragon Ball’s identity.

I think the Pilaf Gang are fine, but I agree completely on Goku.

The only times he ever gave up were when he couldn’t move at all (Saiyan arc), or he had a backup plan (Gohan in the Cell arc, even Monaka [from his POV] in the U6 arc.
