1/ A lot has changed since my dad's reentry in 1962. Mission Control had no visual of reentry and never reestablished comms after blackout. Still, Carpenter reentered and splashed down safely, egressed thru the nose, alone, inflated and then plopped a life raft in the ocean near Puerto Rico.

2/ He climbed down the side of his capsule, climbed into the raft, and scanned the sky for patrol planes. They spotted him within an hour. The USS Intrepid sped choppers to his location and winched him aboard for return to the ship. Some similarities in comms blackout and suspense that creates.
