I see your line of thinking. I am not an NMR-ologist. But solution-phase (which I have done) and solid-state NMR are different things.

And PhD student doing the "things be crystallising, panic!!!" thing, suggests they're doing solution-phase NMR which needs everything to be dissolved, hence DMSO.

Oh I presumed it was "it's Crystalizing! Excite!" And wanting to do XRD. If it's to redissolve for the measurement then that makes sense

I have many times found single crystals in my old NMR tubes and gotten structures from them 😅
