I see your line of thinking. I am not an NMR-ologist. But solution-phase (which I have done) and solid-state NMR are different things.
And PhD student doing the "things be crystallising, panic!!!" thing, suggests they're doing solution-phase NMR which needs everything to be dissolved, hence DMSO.
