I'm going to side with the word experts on this that the terms are interchangeable "at least in North America. And this has been true since around the middle of the 20th century."

Language is a living thing.

PODium. It is in the root of the word, pun intended. You stand ON a podium and BEHIND a lectern.

just so you know @notpodium.bsky.social is beefing with @merriam-webster.com about that. I'm on the Lectern's side here. A podium is what you stand on, a lectern is what you put your notes on and the twain shall never be interchangeable (but can meet -- you can stand on a podium at a lectern)
