Why cranberry? Is there like an associated connotation with cranberries?

It's a stereotypical East Slavic thing that's quite popular especially cranberry juice and sugar-coated cranberries (not so much cranberries as a sauce, that would be a fennoscandic thing).

That historical meaning is largely absent from the knowledge of Russian speakers by the way, I myself wasn't familiar.
