Last night, it was called out when we passed the 144-hour return mark. Why is that significant? Because we’ve designed a crew survival approach for a cabin depressurization scenario through which we could support the crew for 144 hours. Today’s suit tests were part of testing those capabilities.

We designed around a .25” diameter hole in the pressure vessel, which may not sound like much but would still take a good deal of energy to create. If this were to ever happen, we carry enough air to keep the cabin above 8psi for 1 hour. This gives the crew 30 minutes to put the suit on.

on that topic - is the MMOD protection on Orion similar to something like ISS, or does the deep-space environment require a different approach?

It’s not going to be pleasant. Crew will adhere a bag to themselves for fecal collection and attach a body interface with a tube that will connect to a urine tank that can be vented to vacuum. Then they put on compression shorts to hold it all in place.
