He’s absolutely right that prisons and other detention places were bad under Dem presidents.

And know what today’s critics of ICE did then? Complain abt it and demand change.

Is this just a lame deflection, or do GOPers like this genuinely not understand that not all ppl put party loyalty first?

One thing I’ve always felt is fundamentally true, is you can’t have more prisoners than there is space to house them and you can’t have prisons that are nicer or worse than what the poorest free person has available. You have to start treating everyone equal.

You gotta build more houses before you build more prisons. Once you have enough houses it turns out you never needed more prisons in the first place.

MAGA/GOP are shocked when people actually believe in their stated values, because they do not believe in anything but power and greed. Traits they protect themselves from against any introspection that they are in fact the baddies, by deeply assuming everyone as craven as them.

As someone who worked with ICE detainees as a volunteer at a nonprofit during the Obama administration, his statement is a lie.

The facility I would visit was in Santa Ana, where ICE would rent out a portion of the city jail.

These warehouses are a fucking crime.

People without empathy can’t understand how people with empathy see the world or make decisions, by definition.

They always answer with “but, but Clinton, Obama, Biden did it”

I agree. Crime is down! Let’s keep it that way. More concentration camps for illegal kids!

In fact it was one of those sources of leftist/liberal infighting! People got loud about it then! So these guys are just wrong in all ways.

If you've ever had to resolve a dispute between children, you know one of their main defenses, when confronted with wrong doing, will always be "...so & so did it too." Adults are supposed to teach children that is not a defense.

the latter - they cannot conceive of a world that is not zero-sum, purely selfish and transactional, etc.
I genuinely think that there's some research to be done on stunted theory of mind in the MAGA individual

This is a horrifying situation that deserves outrage. We, the American people, are locking up people, including children, in cages, like animals, worse than convicted murderers, for not having the required documentation. People that do the work we do not want to do. We are the Nazis.

Also, no, seriously, the biggest concerns about conditions under Trump are places that _weren’t being used as detention centers before,_ or are now overcrowded due to _radical departures in policy._ This is actually an enormous change and a consequential one. mailchi.mp/43a225b48ded/the-throughline-dont-lose-sight-of-detention-atrocities?e=70d25f5b4a

At the immigration level, def believe that.

But all the things that thread lists—rotting food, collapsing conditions, denied essential medical care—define whole swathes of the conventional prison system, and many ppl who dislike ICE now have lambasted Dems for that all along.

Trump's Gulag. Visited the Manzanar internment camp two weeks ago, near Lone Pine, California. 10,000 non-criminals imprisoned there during WWII. The inmates built a Japanese garden w/a pond, for reflection.

Also, they clearly support this and want more of this to happen. "If you don't speak against it, you support it" - is my view.

Those people are not their intended audience. They are speaking to MAGA.

They will also say this in the same breath as saying we had open borders.

They can't even decide which lie to go with.

One key thing that is different today than under Dem presidents, is that there has been an influx of *tens of billions of dollars* to ICE under Trump, so the funding actually exists to improve detention conditions.

Unfortunately that funding has been earmarked to increase suffering, not reduce it.

Yeah, it’s the latter. It’s like Clinton and Epstein: it’s always like, “yeah, Trump was close to him, but so was one of yours! Checkmate!” And the answer, of course, is yeah, fuck Bill Clinton. Which people making this argument can’t understand. They think they won because it can only be personal.
