Some very say news just in, but Shozin Fukui, director of Pinocchio 964 and Rubbers Lover, passed away on 2 April. As some might know, in the midst of a resurgence of interest in his work that culminated with a 2025 retrospective at K's Cinema in Shinjuku, he was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer.

I met him several times over the years, with trip to the Kemuri TV Bar that he ran with his wife a regular fixture in my trips to Tokyo, and @sarahappleton.bsky.social and I filmed him there back in 2024 for the UK release of Pinocchio 964 for @88films.bsky.social

He was always charming, friendly and interested what we were up to, and I feel genuinely sad our paths will never cross again. My heart goes out to everyone who know him, but especially his wife, who has put such a brave face on the situation since the diagnosis. She truly is a remarkable person.

I just don't know what to say at the moment, truly a massive loss.

I hope he knew how much we appreciated his works.

Yeah, I don't know what happened to that film, beyond the fact its original elements no longer exist beyond its vhs transfer, but I don't know for sure what is stopping any official kind of release of the film, beyond the fact it screened at the K's retro.
