if executives just actually gave even a smidgeon of a shit about appealing to an audience and giving them what everyone can clearly see they want, there'd be untold millions- billions maybe- up for grabs.
there are so many underserved HUGE denominations clambering for ANY scraps right now

I still cant believe that the fan fiction part of the internet literally exists to create shit that nobody else will ever give them or make for them, and they are not being tapped. nobody tries to appeal to them.

I remember talking to a Hollywood producer years ago, and she commented that β€œAll studio executives are idiots. Straight up. They will never come to the obvious conclusion that a normal, sane person would. Rather, they do things that go against common sense and reason.β€œ

Instead executives just wanna wait til someone else makes something good people want and then try to buy it so they can announce a live action movie that'll likely get canceled near completion for the tax break and the entire studio let go when they'redome milking the hype.

Sacrilege.

It's crazy too because I'd culturally put a pretty straight line between Avatar/Adventure Time/Steven Universe and popular indies now. "Kids shows that could be really dark/deep" to adults who grew up on that leaning into it even more.

They already made this kind of stuff, they just stopped

(obviously it's more than just that. anime, fanfics, internet culture in general, and the newgrounds era building up an audience for edgier indie animation on youtube are all part of the mix for this boom. However, still, the studios are one of its many daddies.)
