Technically, the almost match allows for annular eclipses. Total eclipses would be possible if the moon appeared to be much larger than the sun just as they are possible with the close match

And in some solar eclipses the moon does appear larger than the sun

Due to both the lunar orbit around earth and earth's orbit around the sun not being exactly circular, and the apparent size of the moon and sun from earth being very similar, we sometimes get full solar eclipses, and sometimes get annular eclipses. A neat coincidence.
