I did a back of an envelope calculation and, by my reckoning, going from 1000kg to 1600kg empty (tare) average mass of an vehicle means three times the wear on the tarmac.

Based on what? Did you allow for the tire contact area? The power? The speed? There's a whole raft of other factors that come into play and it's highly simplistic just to use car weight. Even cars with the same weight will have different load distribution between the axles.
