One of my biggest challenges these last few years is trying not to become an absolute misanthrope, because I just can't see how being so bitter and rueful about anyone (however justified!) is healthy living.

I’d argue it’s also not pragmatic. People can rise to the occasion. They often do. Idk what it would take for Americans to get there at this point. But they’re capable.

If you want a rationalist, egalitarian, open, liberal society I don’t think you get there by trying to out-cynicism the GOP.
