So far only a few prototype SMRs exist. They are more expensive per MW than big powerplants so it would probably need a few thousand to make them economical viable. For that amount of money you could build humongous amounts of sodium ion batteries that would cover all production

gaps of the renewables many times over. Plus they would help stabilise grid frequency and would cut peak loads. So less curtailment costs for the installed solar and wind capacity.
