Ex-IT tech here and, yes, you are correct. Some (like Copilot) can even scrub backwards on your search history and purchase history in browsers and (the real gold for them) figure out who you're connected to. If your data is sold to a company with connections to compare/manipulate it's worth more.

Though it shouldn’t be necessary, using a VPN, anonymizing search engines, effective 2FA, and a privacy-focused browser should be basic computer skills taught at the level of “how to send an email”.
