Why do early NES game covers displayed pixel arts instead of flattering artworks? To rebuild buyers’ trust. A VG market crash of '83 where games of poor quality saturated the market killed the public faith in it. Nintendo Entertaining System was a mouthful to avoid alluding to the bad rap of VGs.

It sure did help with consumer trust and protecting the company's image. One main reason being that this type of boxart more accurately represented the in-game graphics as opposed to some abstract art like you'd see on other games or arcade cabinets.

What people saw was pretty much what they got.
