I don't think their systems are overwhelmed. I think they just pulled the plug on unsubbing in order to stop the hemorrhaging. Companies do that a lot lately.

I'd be surprised if cancelation taking a few tries isn't common all the time.

Most likely. These companies are famously opposed to letting us opt out of things quickly and easily
