This isn’t true. Yes, the designation was lifted in July, 2008 (during the GW Bush Administration), but it was largely irrelevant by then, since Mandela had already delivered a speech to a Joint Session of the US Congress in 1990, when Bush Sr. was president.

the US backed South African apartheid just as it backs Israeli apartheid, in both cases one manifestation of this is the designation of freedom fighters as terrorists. the only reason for a change in tune from the US government is because the freedom fighters won.

if you’re gonna be pedantic about the dates, fine, it was in the year before Obama took office, my memory is imperfect. the larger point stands—Mandela was never a terrorist, only a white supremacist imperialist nation would designate him so.
