It really doesn't
Ask the Islamists who have UK passports but attack the UK and their supposed fellow citizens
Britishness, or its absence, is in the heart not in a bureaucrat's box ticking

i don't agree. it's partly that, it's confirmed by a bureaucrat but it's also in the heart

But in that case Britishness is an ineffable moral thing, unknowable to anyone but the individual - or debatable in everyone's case (was Kim Philby British? Is ex-prince Andrew? etc). Is it really useful to muddy the political waters with that, when "British citizen" carries no such implication?

It's not based on the unknowable - we do know. Islamists reject the idea they're British. It's at the heart of their argument
I'm sorry to say Philby and Andrew are/were British. There's no escaping ot

How about the white supremacists who sold the country to Putin, aka Brexit - deaths from economic consequences far greater than 100 years of terrorist attacks

You're missing the point, Dave
Islamists are offended by the statement that they're British. I think we ought to respect that

A state is at it's heart a bureaucracy.
