my CS101 prof (who it turns out was a pioneer in nondestructive testing) pointed out that GIGO falls down a little in practice because sometimes it's hard to know that your input is garbage.

Everyone has been assuming that their inputs were vetted by the source, while sources are assuming their outputs are being vetted by consumers

Sure, but in the instance of genai LLMs, and I'm not even talking generalized ai, the input is basically the average of everything they've scraped from the Internet

Working on an ai platform one of the things we tried doing was forcing the models to only pull from sources the user selected. The idea was that implementing these guardrails would stop hallucinations

I was just thinking about the test case input, but yes, of course. Also a lot of people just get the LLM to do the test cases as well. 😬
