It's taken me like 30+ years to get just barely "OK" with mushrooms and even still I find 'em unappealing most of the time. Sometimes too rubbery, sometimes too earthy...they're just weird :(

(That said my "bad take" is that I can't and won't do olives or capers. I don't want to bite into what's basically a salt filled Gusher. No thanks.)

Mushrooms are easy to prepare badly (usually undercooked), which really doesn't help their rep.

It also doesn't help that the tastiest mushrooms are all horrifically expensive, so most people are eating various growth stages of agaricus bisporus, which mostly just tastes earthy and not much else.
