Oh, come on. Seriously? This is some Scooby Doo level villainy. I'd laugh, if it wasn't so damn evil!

Meta's always been Orwellian as fuck, but they should never be given the opportunity to shape laws to their favor.

At some point people need to call age verification child autonomy reduction acts. Their sole purpose is to reduce children's autonomy from adults not to protect them

that, or adult surveillance bills, as it connects identity/activity (even if they say it doesn’t store data, the multiple leaks from different verification apps say otherwise)

usually anything that’s referred to as β€œparental rights” is a blatant attack on children’s autonomy/self determination

The research was undertaken over two days. By a Generative AI.

Not that I don't think that Meta is indeed one of the primary benificiaries of legislation like this, but let's have some actual investigative journalism please, rather than leaving it to a clanker? thanks

If we lived in a just society, the police would investigate this.

But you know...

Of course it’s Meta.

Because Mark Fuckerberg views every single person that isn’t him as an exploitable resource to be screwed over, lied to, and enslaved for money.

Basically the tech bros are drawing the battle lines right now over who gets to control more of the people and the future.

Of course it's the Zucc.

"The ASAA requires app stores to verify user ages before downloads but imposes no requirements on social media platforms. If it becomes law, Apple and Google absorb the compliance cost while Meta's apps face zero new mandates."

Umm isn't this a good thing? I don't want apps doing this individually

They want it done on the OS level and forbid EU-style anonymization so that the device is forced to "chirp" the user's biometric data to every app and website that exists - the result allows them to target extremely specific demographics with greater precision than ever seen before for targeted ads

This gives more creedence to this theory that Facebook in its inception was actually a CIA thing

Naturally, they weren't satisfied with convincing a significant chunk of the population to start permanently attaching their names and faces to their entire presence on the internet, so they want to lobby to require everyone else to do the same.

THIS. I've said for AGES that FB completely changed internet rules. I'm a '90s kid, I was raised with "no personal infos, no photos, no name or age online" rules. And then FB came and normalised sharing very identifiable informations online.
I'm glad my FB doesn't have any photo nor my real name.

Facebook has ruined the internet in ways that students will be studying in like 100 years.

Mark really needed someone to slap him when it was clear he was never getting over his ex. Like... Just take him aside, tell him to grow tue fuck up, and slap him so hard his jaw was dislocated.

In short, your age is required at device setup and is permanent. Apps can request your age whenever they like. That request is run through various verification companies which charge money for every request. They make money from apps you install asking how old you are. And there is no way around it!

Of course it's Meta

those laws means that small people can't create their own community websites anymore, because they won't be able to have the age id structure for it

it's all about making the internet controlled by Corporate

@aftermath.site @mothership.blog I think we need journalist touching on this if not just to corroborate all that data in a way that lay people could understand and also just to verify as some of it was done with claude so having journalist look into how accurate this is would be a net benefit.

I will say as non-journalist skimming through...It's disappointing Claude was used BUT DAMMIT THIS TYPE OF SHIT IS EXACTLY WHAT MACHINE LEARNING ALGORITHMS ARE GOOD FOR.

(coughs) I do like that there's more than JUST the genAI and that its use is limited. Still needs to be looked at closely but...

Ya, it's generally guys in the business that can afford the bill for the stupid requirement that won't work but who can use it to dodge accountability and ward out competition behind this stuff.

The usage of an LLM in any way, especially a publicly available one prone to overcorrecting in response to anticipated user desire really harms this to the point of reasonable doubt. How many of these sources are hallucinated? How many of those sources are load-bearing?

This report reeks of LLM use. Maybe it is just to format things, but I would be wary of these claims without verification! Still this is very concerning

Indeed, at the bottom they say they use Claude. I don't think that necessarily means it's false but it deserves careful scrutiny

Can't speak to the formatting (they very well could just be using some autocorrect tool as well), but using ML to sort through billions of data points that no human could do in a lifetime is actually one of the few ethical uses of the technology.

Each point presented is independently sourced.

I could of told ya it was Meta cause they literally are facing lawsuits in several states for endangering kids life & had forms leaked out where they acknowledge they was making a predatory platform geared at kids. So why not just force age verifaction on everyone instead of deal with consquences.

I remember hearing him on the radio, saying absolutelty needed to get IDs to stop kids from getting turned into nazis. The fact he had no issue turning adults into them just went ignored by the radio hosts.

The same Meta that got the ball rolling on the TikTok ban??

Mark single handedly destroyed the internet

Meta lobbied for the ban. then offered to buy the app. that sequence is worth studying independently of whether TikTok is a national security concern.

This report was produced using the help of Claude Code as a research assistant (see Methodology and Tools). As such, the post is probably awaiting moderator approval because no one has verified the research yet. If it were a takedown, the error would be different.
