A mistake people often make is assuming that highlighting the downsides of AI means you’re anti-tech.

I am hugely pro-tech, but I think generative AI, on the path it’s currently on, will be net negative.

I think many feel the same.

Opposing AI boosterism ≠ being anti-tech.

Wholeheartedly agree. As a human, I see the flaw of "God-like" comparisons thrown about by the billionaire AI racers. Being anti-super villain AGI is a reasonable position.

You were doing fine, until you said this:
“I think many feel the same.”
Unsupported conjecture.

I'm rather pro-innovation and pro-tech, but what I think about ai affects neither. It's an opinion. And one cannot derived a whole from one source.

Agree. I'm not even anti-LLM. The tech has uses, mainly at searching and summarizing data. But RN it's also destroying the sources of that data. And even if people keep wanting to contribute useful content voluntarily that gets harder when you are competing for attention with all the slop. How...

is anyone supposed to know any more? It's like you turned the town square into an open sewer. That tends not to be conducive to public health.

Right. A lot of great inventions are going the wrong direction because of oligarchs like the internet itself.

AI has good uses, but guardrails are needed and we haven’t provided any. The tech lords are preventing that from happening because they see potential for profit and control. We’re probably fucked.

Ditto anything. Dare to question a particular vax and suddenly you're a tin hat wearing anti-vaxxer whose children should all die horribly.

Question EVs and you're a world killing luddite.

Some people think that disagreeing with one thing means you disagree with all.

There are no guard rails. Most of it is garbage. A bunch of tech newbies trying to make a financial windfall or large companies forcing AI into spaces where it isn't needed.

That and all the idiots that conflate being a Luddite with being anti technology.

Yes. And being pro Ai technology doesnt mean youre pro tech villains using it for nefarious purposes

AI criticism increasingly feels like people who got their brains permanently deformed by social media pointing out very real problems while simultaneously ignoring that their house is glass

AI is bad but it might actually be less bad than Facebook was at its most Facebook

Watching Asimov Foundations anyone? It’s inevitable the path of AI…

AI is relatively cheap now, like the cloud was back in the day. Once AI gets more imbedded into organizations they will jack up the prices so much orgs will be forced to hire humans back, if there are any that are skilled enough to do the work. Overall it will be a net loss for orgs that go too deep

The future of AI is agentic, not generative.

AI boosterism has become a secular religion where "doubt" is treated as heresy.
But being pro-tech means being a critic. You don’t help a pilot by ignoring the warning lights. Calling out the net-negative trajectory of GenAI is a safety check, not a rejection of progress. ⚠️

The problem is that many are *NOT* "highlighting the downsides of AI" or even saying that "AI, on the path it’s currently on, will be net negative".

They are saying that AI is bad and should be forbidden forever. Period.

And this *IS* anti-tech.

Same. I’m plenty technical having worked in engineering in aerospace for 38 yrs.

It's the people and companies pushing the tech and over hyping it's usefulness.

I am not convinced that what is promised is even possible with this technology. 🤷‍♂️

Head of Engineering for a medtech company here. I have built systems combining fluids, electronics, optics, etc etc for 20+ years. I love tech. I use AI to aid me, but am definitely on the sceptical side of it. Too many issues technically right now and socially & economically in future.

It's hard to sort through the AI hype and find the utility of some of these applications.

AGREED! ... And at this point, I like AI better than the Billionaires who are forcing their hallucinating products down our throats so they can take them public and cash out before the bubble bursts.

An immature tech was foisted upon the world as a cure-all without consideration of its flaws. Pushback is appropriate.

The tech bros want to be kings and they think they can make AI do the governing. It's not that AI in and of itself is all evil, but some of the worst people in the world are very into it and there are not a lot of guardrails. The tech itself is never the bad guy, it is always human behavior.

There is no “anti-technology” or “pro-technology”. Technology is a means to an end, not an end in itself. Use it if it furthers some aim you have, otherwise don’t.

There ABSOLUTELY are both. That you don't find them logical is another matter but both positions absolutely do exist.

I remember watching War Games at the theater when it first came out. I'm not a fan of where we are headed with AI.

Someday "real" will be worth more... Many people from all generations already know this -- But since we've been told we can't stop AI, the big companies are the ones who will have to lose something in order to realize "reals" worth. More is not always better- but real is.

People often mistake critical evaluation to be the same as disdain. That admitting something needs improvements is disloyal. Or that dislike for a part indicates hatred for the whole.

Binary thinking. Maybe there's not enough "if... then..." statements in their code?

Considering I have spent the last 30 yrs working on cutting edge tech should make my tech stance clear, and while there is some useful AI tooling out there- the current AI circle jerk - these guys aren’t innovative, their gold digging pirates.

It's too general to say pro-or anti-tech

In AI, I'm anti-LLM, but pro-Machine Learning.

I'm anti-crypto, but pro-blockchain.

I'm pro-tool. Whatever the tool, if there is a use for it, use it. I don't oppose the existence of tools. I oppose the misuse of tools. If there were a lot of people suddenly advocating that we all start wrenches as hammers for construction nailing, I would oppose it. That's a misuse.
