Somehow missed a new release of Dethrace, a reverse-engineered port of Carmageddon, two weeks ago.

Right now it doesn't offer any enhancements beyond unlocked framerate, but the game seems to run perfectly fine in software rendered 640x480.

Does that look like a city from Daggerfall to anyone else?

"Carmageddon" still feels very therapeutic to play.

After playing a bunch of racing games where the other drivers get to screw you over with no real consequence, it feels pretty cathartic to be able to wreck the fuck out of them in the first two Carmageddons.

Not so much in the floaty garbage that is the third one, it was only ever barely playable.

Always was blow away by software rendering performance in that game. I first ran it on a dog slow outdated machine and it blew my mind that it was not only playable but action-game fast.

Yep. And then it was impossible to run in high resolution software mode on *anything*.

I played it in postage stamp size on a 486SX50 for a time. Then my dad upgraded his work computer to a Pentium 166Mhz and that was bliss - every Saturday I got to play it for a few hours.
