Thank you for this link - I came to know Robert Moses through his work on The Algebra Project, a transformative, revolutionary approach to teaching mathematics. I wish I’d had the opportunity to hear him speak - perhaps I could come to terms with patriotism as you have.

It’s not about saviors swooping in to tell locals how it’s done, including (especially?) in my field of journalism. That will never work. But unserious power brokers will always try to make us believe it will.

Breaking cycles starts with knowing that they exist and why.

Yes, he taught me that freedom is a daily struggle by design, steeped in the lessons of history and always, always involving young people and working to widen your community. It can never be taken for granted, and that’s a huge flaw of the so-called exceptional, American experience and approach.
