"I need AI to make art, human art is only for the rich and privileged-"

The only thing that is privileged about art, no matter the form (music, paint, clay…), is that the wealthy have all the free time they need to pursue it and hire teachers to help develop develop their skills. And they rarely stick with it.

In contrast, the poor fight for every spare second.

The wild part is this was like...2000? It's probably one of the first genuine memes, before we even had that word.

The fact that someone went on Al Gore’s internet, accessed Bluesky dot com, and posted that they need to use AI to make art is insane to me.

i have never heard anyone say real art is "only for the rich and privileged". the rich and the privileged are the ones championing gen ai right now

I have had someone say this, but it's only because they refused to learn how to draw and wanted to co-opt the skill for their own.

I have issues where I need to control exactly what my art looks like. So ai is an issue for me because I have no artistic control over it. Also it's actually not as easy to do that as it seems, so I'd rather learn to draw then learn to prompt.

You'd think their horse drawings were weird and badly shaped until you see the actual sort of horses that were around back then and you can recognise them instantly based just on the drawings.

I litterally made this in my parents basement with mspaint and it is STILL better than whatever ai can belch up

Generative AI can go fuck itself. I'll never accept it.

The key thing to note about this is that, unlike a real person, the usage of AI is not something that can be done without the use of *some* sort of device that can be used as an artistic medium - even if you inexplicably only have access to a terminal, that could at *least* be used for ASCII art

"human art is only for the rich and privileged"

My Dude/Dudette... A pencil costs like 50 cents and scrap paper is EVERYWHERE

What they mean is "I need AI to make art because I can't be bothered to practice"

or

Or "I'm a tech bro who wants to seem cultured but I don't understand art/creativity"
2

You can also do scrapbooking, journaling-
You can use scraps and make art!
Even you can doodle on a cocktail napkin using a simple Bic pen.

Seriously, owning any machine you need to run generative AI on is a far bigger sign of being "privileged" than anything you need to make art with

i love it when memes like this have that little bit of assonance with the original wording

making a software spit out a slop image for you is straight up less efficient as a means of expression, in part because language translated to image is inefficient.

using your hand/feet/whatever to draw the image is a more natural means of expression, this has been true for over 20 thousand years.
2

24
Even literally writing "Imagine a picture of ..." (and not involving AI at all) is going to express more closely what you intend, by not having layers of loss...
0

26
Also worth remembering that there is no gene for written / codified language. Meaning every human alive today, and throughout history, has been repurposing part of the brain for something less-than-natural.

Meanwhile, artistic expression DOES seem to be natural, based upon prehistory.

Traditional art, whether in the ancient era, has more inner value than both digital and AI art. Picasso's and Michelangelo's are more important and precious than AI.

this meme hits so hard!! art has always been radically accessible - people made timeless work with literal dirt and berries

whats gatekept isnt ability to create, its access to markets/platforms and time to develop craft. ai doesnt solve any of that

Didn't a dude once literally put a urinal in a world-famous public gallery to prove a point about gatekeeping art supplies or something and it constantly gets fascists (the primary peddlers of the genAI bullshit) really really mad?

And charcoal from fires used to cook and keep us warm.

Art doesn't have to be pretty to be art. Some of the best surviving works of art are rough and ugly by todays standards that chase the illusion of perfection.

My take has always been that someone willing to settle for AI never wanted art in the first place, just something to fill in a visual hole where something vaguely art like is socially expected.

The whole "struggling artist" archetype has been with us because the human desire to *make* art has exceeded the human desire *to pay for* art in most places at most times in recent history. 🙃

I've made digital sculpts, 3D models, headhack collages, pixel art, clay sculpts, woodwork, leatherwork, and 2D artwork in various mediums, all in my lifetime. I'm not that good at any of them, but some of those pieces I've sold into commercial items. I've also tried AI, and stopped because it sucks
1

and because some art gallery sites I'm a member of has started punishing 3D artists for posting their work up, while hypocritically praising A.I. "artists" for their slop. I'm still proud of the stuff I personally made through actual art techniques, and refuse to associate with A.I. in any respect.

I may be hotdog water at art, but using ai is like calling myself a chef because I ordered online.

And at least with ordered food I can assume it’s the food I ordered without “hallucinations”

I heard a story once, no idea if it's true, but Picasso visited one of those painted caves. When he came out he was crying. "We've learned nothing," he said, meaning that everything modern painters know about perspective, anatomy, depicting movement etc was already known & mastered 30,000 years ago

Yes, I remember when I was so rich and privileged as a child that I played with toys found in the garbage and used the cheapest pencils in the world and drew on every piece of shitty paper I could find. Good times.
Goodness, I can't stand them! 🤬

I can make art. Just not any art I actually want to make.

And that's why society needs more availability and accessibility of art classes, and time away from barely surviving to actually use those classes.

So I can do more than just eye my collection of video art courses, and struggle to pay rent.

To think—-

‘Art is only for the rich privileged people.’

So I am going to make them even MORE rich by PAYING them for a sub par, stolen, Franken-product.

Instead of PAYING AN ARTIST

Do they think that super rich people are still adopting their favorite artists, providing room and board, and paying them to create new works endlessly or something?

Cus that level of patronage basically doesn’t exist anymore and yet millions of people make art.

One of my favorite things about these paintings is this is how we know how certain species looked. For example the male European lions were largely maneless and wild horses had an astonishing variety of coat colors and patterns.

Like, also, there are people right now, on this site, offering comms for less than $50. If you have the wiggle room in your budget for a AAA game, you can get beautiful art from humans (or therians, otherkin, etc. etc.) who love to make art!

You want to have a hand in the art but you're not comfortable with linework? Commission some linework and ask if you can color it in yourself. It's fun! It's coloring books, you remember those? It is good for the human spirit! If you know how to use a spraypaint tool in Krita, you can shade too!

"Human art is only for the rich and privileged" is an INSANE take when most artists are struggling to make ends meet and still creating for the love of their craft. Try again - zero excuse to turn to AI art.
