Grid Strategies forecast 60GW of AI data center in the USA by 2030:

So that's 600 megatons of H-bombs expoding in 2030, or about 1500 megatons released between now and then.

All to power fucking chatbots.

Our entire global civilization literally does not have the infrastructure or capability of generating, harnessing, and transporting this much power and dumping it all into AI monstrosities on the timescale required for this bubble not to collapse. The infrastructure just straight up doesn't exist.

1GW is the size of an average modern nuclear power reactor unit. So these centers require 60 nuke plants, or the equivalent of.

The worst part is that it's probably accurate. While it is possible to run the models locally, it's much more convenient to just buy into a big company's model.

It's all nonsense and bullshit anyway, Altman lying through his teeth to keep the financial boat afloat a bit longer as usual. Conservatively, building 1 GW of compute capacity takes 2-3 years and around 30 billion dollars. @edzitron.com has an excellent, detailed breakdown in this article:

This is the energy budget of the AI bubble: a nuclear war every year, *just in the USA alone*โ€”everyone else is *also* going all in on this self-destructive bullshit.

(Meanwhile, if you want a non-LLM chatbot, they've existed since the 1960s and can probably run on a smartwatch.)

I just keep thinking about how he wants to build a Dyson Sphere.

(Who does he think he is? Cthulhu?)

I don't know. But I think users will pay this big money for LLM chatbots. Starting this November, OpenAI will launch an adult chat service with age verification. We invent something close to AI, and immediately turn it into a whore. That's the humankind :)))

When the economy crashes and Trump institutes martial law to quell rioting, Altman will tweet from his Hawaiian enclave โ€˜look folks, I empathize with your upsettedness, but we did say all along that it was artificial.โ€˜

That is not a budget, it's an estimation from a power sector consulting firm based on linear growth (they took the higher end of a 10-65GW range "industry specialists" forecasted to be needed in 5 years and called it a day).
But even getting to 2026 without the debt ๐Ÿซง imploding would be the miracle.

Unsustainable. That these numbers are coming into view is why the money is starting to walk away from the AI VC space. Unfortunately this isn't going to pop like a bubble with so much overinvestment among the core IT buffoons. Likely slow deflation followed by a couple of massive imlosions.

I don't know if this actually tracks for someone who knows things, but I have come to think of it like this: if these systems had the powers and aims they are purported to have, there would be a massive investment in Reversible computing and other hyper-efficient compute pathways. Gimme a 20w brain.
