They were growing up in the 80s during the peak era of the Space Shuttle, where every launch was an event. This probably paid a significant role. Being an astronaut was like the coolest thing you could do.

I'm older GenX (58yo). In the 1970s we built model rockets that actually flew; countdowns from our backyard launchpads. 😀 Our tree-forts were spaceships in our imaginations.

I knew that becoming a real astronaut one day was an unrealistic dream... but I'm glad and proud that SOME of us did it. 😀🤘
