3 days pay for 1 day of work sounds like the work of 3 employees or am I missing something?

Only one person does the work. If you move a train in a yard for an hour, drive a diesel-only train for two hours, and then drive a diesel-electric train in diesel mode for three hours, you get three days of pay.

And the rules probably exist because the company was ending shifts at the far end of the network from the depot and making the drivers take the train back on their own time, and expecting them to carry passengers for the part that went through the passenger tracks
