I would not require them to agree with me on, like, the specific tax rate for capital gains, but most political things that matter go to a person's central values. Like, I'm not dating someone who disagrees with me about who should or should not have basic human rights.

"Hi, nice to finally meet you. Do you think that the CDC is lying to the American people?"

all of the agita about this just amounts to columnists worrying that nobody will fuck their awful Nazi sons.

nobody thinks it’s “politics” when you meet someone at church, or grandma wants you to settle down with a nice Jewish girl

I'd date someone who voted for Bush, McCain, or Romney. I'd never date a Trump voter. There's a difference.

Bush - either one - would be my red line, I think.

A thing that catapulted me out of the conservatism I was raised with for good was that I once thought that most people wanted good for people but had different ideas of how to get there but then increasingly realizing I was absolutely wrong about that & a lot of people wanted the worst for others.

I've only been in two significant relationships and in both cases there were few if any political disagreements. That wasn't because we discussed political matters beforehand, but because stuff like empathy and kindness were mutually important and those are pretty good predictors of politics.

Same for me. I never had any definitive political guidelines in dating, but it wouldn’t take me long, simply through conversation & interactions with others, to figure out this person was or was not compatible with my values.

Now I'm imagining meeting a woman in law school and the two of us having a falling out over, like, Lopez and Commerce Clause jurisprudence.

Right. I think I could date someone (mercy, I hope I never have to date again) who I disagreed with on some politics, but not about human decency and the right of everyone to exist.

Sad that political disagreements now implicate empathy and kindness. Maybe they always did but doesn‘t seem like it has to be this way.
