Reader, you will not be surprised to learn that Christopher Rufo is at the center of yet another manufactured right wing outrage cycle.

It is a awesome project!

Why does an overpass to traffic that carries almost no load cost $144 million to construct?

Just curious, it seems excessive

Where's RFK Jr. gonna get his roadkill from if we build safe crossing points?

If I can't die by being violently ejected through my 8-miles-a-gallon truck's windshield because I slammed into a deer going 95 in a 55 while not wearing a seatbelt, am I even FREE? GOD.

Next you're going to want the ambulance that comes to collect my dying carcass to be paid for by the state!

Too late, RFK already scraped you up for the White House cafeteria’s Meaty Monday

And of course the nytimes will run stories on it with "both sides" to legitimize his astroturfing.

"So, Mr. Rufo -- you got your start creating an outrage cycle to divert attention from the Southern Baptist Convention's 20 year history of shuttling pedophiles between parishes to rack of 700 raped children. Why should we listen to a pedophile protector like you?"

I’m thinking we shouldn’t listen to him. About anything.

Every article that mentions him should preface it with, "Noted liar and pedophile protector Christopher Rufo..."

Christopher Rufo can stay the fuck out of our state.

(But also … How beautiful the hills look in the photo in the article!)

i wonder if he also wailed about the crossings over i90. been cool seeing all the critters on the cams that came with the projects

He was too busy wailing about homelessness in Seattle and failing to get elected to city council.

I was at UC Davis when Limbaugh discovered that the city had spent money to build in tunnels for frogs in a highway overpass that also went through some wetlands.

This was considered an absolute boondoggle.

I thought people, if nothing else, would appreciate less hosing frog parts off their car

I as a civil engineer, and my wife as a biologist, had a libertarian friend who whined that this wildlife crossing was a complete waste of money. We explained to him why he was wrong and when he tried to object, we gave him a look of death, and he dropped his objection. No longer friends with him.

People who only think of money as the end all and be all of everything are a plague upon this nation. Money is not a god upon itself, it is a tool, and misusing that tool is as far as I'm concerned, as sin. People and the ecology are much more important than wealth.

I admit I was uncertain when they started building and testing them in Alberta (not exactly leftist treehugger territory) but they seem to be working

Why are republicans SUCH assholes?! Animals? They REALLY could care less about ANY life except a FETUS and ONLY until it’s out safely then they hand them a pair of bootstraps and send them to the firing squad πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„

I've driven under them on the TransCanada highway in BC, and they're very cool. It's a good feeling to know that we are doing something relatively selfless.

I live in Ventura County and have watched them put up this structure. I can only see it from the freeway, but it already looks stunning. And as I actually have to live with it as a resident here, I'm pretty overjoyed that it exists. It is better than a ballroom.

Can't say I'm surprised at a Right Wing view anymore, just more disappointed.

Humans are animals. Animals all matter. I'm not saying you can't hunt/eat/own animals. But don't be an asshole about it, conserve where you can, and always respect!

It’s also just common sense to not want things coming through your windshield when you’re doing 79mph at 10:30pm

1) Sincerely good to know journalism is still happening.

2) RW mediasphere should redirect its outrage at cost overruns to the ballooning cost of the Iran War & WH ballroom.

Everyone who js writing about this should read Crossings by @bengoldfarb.bsky.social and they’ll realizes these are massive cost savings by building wildlife overpasses.

(For clarification, I drive under this thing at least eight times a year when we visit my wife’s family in Ventura, and it has always shown clear signs of moving towards completion and it’s actually a really cool landmark)

First time I drove under it, I was unclear what it was.

"Wait, why are they building a bridge here? There's no exit."

Then I looked it, and really, this is cool as hell.

One of the best parts of the drive to Ventura! I always look forward to seeing how it's doing.

I live 5 miles from it. They are actively working on it. They are working on the section over Agoura Road.

It’s immense and awesome and will look like the mountain is sliding across the freeway when it’s done. I love it; it’s by far the coolest thing the Conejo has done in the 23 years I’ve lived here.

Fuck all the haters; it’s amazing.

i drive under it several times a day. it’s looking close to done and i can’t wait to see live feeds of animals crossing :)

I live a few short miles away. It’s going to be AWESOME. and it’s taking about as long to complete as you’d expect a massive structure like it to take.

My wife and I contributed to it early on and get progress reports. It's an awesome project. And anyone who wants to get shirty about it deserves a tire iron to the throat. I'm sick of these cretinous malcontents running their stupid mouths without consequences.

We need one desperately in Ithaca to ease deer pressure in the neighborhoods between Cornell and the lake.

These things literally protect *people*. As a resident of the Rocky Mountains, I've seen the decrease in animal-vehicle collisions firsthand when these get installed. Head-ass thing to oppose.

There are several wildlife crossings between Banff and Lake Louise in Canada. They don't look quite as fancy as the ones (one?) in California, but they may, possibly, cost quite a bit less? Either way, they are a great idea and should be everywhere.

I’ve been going back and forth between the Central Coast more now, I love see the progress each trip I take, I can’t wait to see the finished project and I would love to see a smaller version in South OC or San Diego if possible

This thing is the largest one of its kind in the world? It...just...doesn't seem that much to be upset about? Got one near me, in the outskirts of nowhere, that spans 4 lanes. Otherwise pretty similar. Doubles as a nature path. The universal reaction to it being built was "oh, that's nice" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Given the amount of deer i see napping along the side of the road in Virginia, wildlife crossings are a simple genius idea that will save lives and reduce accidents

I live right there. It's always heartbreaking to hear when another cougar has been run over on the 101 or 118. I've been glad to watch it develop I hopes that it would make a difference for them (and all our animals out here)

When I lived in Montana, it was close to the Flathead Reservation which had (still has) one of these at the very south edge of the rez. Never heard a bad word about it β€” no reason for anyone to. Impressive and awesome.

There are several of these crossings in the Canadian Rockies, and it's interesting to actually see the wildlife using them.

Wildlife crossings f*cking reduce car crashes, including sometimes injury or even fatal ones (I mean for people!).

Grrrrrrrr.

Yeah, if you give deer, moose, or buffalo a way to cross the road without getting hit, it reduces your chances of hitting them with your own vehicle

Stuff like this just proves that Republicans are evil.

Not misinformed, not having a different view on how to improve the world.

They want to cause suffering as much as possible. They want animals and humans to be hurt. They are EVIL.

Chris should ponder the impact on a driver of hitting a moose or elk while driving a small or midsized vehicle.

Any critique of anything like this should start with "a lie is a statement made with the intent to deceive."
So even if something is technically true, if it's presented in a way to mislead, such as dropping important info, it's a lie.
By that definition, most everything Rufo ever says is a lie.

Dumb as shit right wingers can get the hell away from our project; the whole area (which I used to live in) absolutely loves it. Wildlife won't tragically get hit by cars and cause terrible accidents.
