People expected fascism to come with a cross wrapped in a flag, and it’s just the same racist rhetoric and assumptions that have always been present.

In the same way that Marxists would say “fascism is imperialism turned towards the metropole,” I think American fascism is basically “a dictator who treats all Americans as if they were black people under Jim Crow.”

But like, for that to work, it’s gotta start with disfavored populations.

Yep and the thing that’s erased is that under Jim Crow everyone was living under a totalitarian regime of extrajudicial violence. They targeted white people all the time but it was framed racially and thus became a “Black problem.”

As a matter of fact, in 1935, when Sinclair Lewis wrote this famous quote, there was very fascist and undemocratic shit happening in the US South at that very moment.
