If you must have lilies, remove the stamens outside, use a damp cloth to clean any pollen off the petals outside, wash your hands, then put the plant/cut flowers where the cats can't mess with them.

If there is no such place they do not come indoors.

Wanted to say thanks for making me aware of this whenever the last lily-associated holiday was. A friend kindly bought us some beautiful lilies but none of us realised ❤️

Canna lilies are safe because they are not true lilies. They were domesticated as a food crop thousands of years ago by indigenous Americans. You can eat the tubers like potatoes. There's a variety still grown for food. All parts are used, stalks and leaves used as animal fodder.

Cannas grow so tall, and come in such vibrant colors! Didn’t know they were edible, though—thanks for giving me something new to go investigate.

If Cranky Relative You're Making Peace With brings lilies:

🌟Option 1🌟
Don't accept them. Tell them the reason, make up an excuse, suggest Cousin Hasnocats would prefer them, or just let them throw a fit

If that's not an option (I promise I am genuinely not judging you, we all do what we gotta do),

Option 2 - coping 🫠
Dock the lilies ASAP (take a damp piece of kitchen roll, remove the yellow anthers from the stamens, throw into outside bin). This DOES NOT REMOVE DANGER but mitigates how readily it spreads itself around the house. Decontaminate all related surfaces rigorously.
And then:

I will definitely keep my cat away from lilies! But can I just say that the cat in that image seems pretty miffed that it cannot munch a delicious lily.

Last year we lost our big boy Brodie to lily pollen. We do not have lilies, he was an indoor cat. As best we can guess a bee crawled on lilies in next door's garden, got into the house, and he ate it.

I dug up literally *every damn lily* that the previous owners of my partner's house planted out front when I moved in with my old cat - I didn't want to take any chances!

Lillies are always a no go in our house/yard but does anyone know if there are other flowers that have the same exposure risk? I know plenty that are a "do not eat" risk but my indoor kitties are kept well away. I would be gutted if I accidentally brought some deadly pollen in with me, tho.

There aren’t many that are as lethal as lilies but anything that grows from a bulb (including onions) can be sus

Thank you for sharing this timely reminder -- dear friends of mine lost a cat to an inadvertent lily exposure, and they were devastated. Hope this helps others avoid the same!!!

I get severe migraines from lilies, so even more reason for me never to accept them! 🤗

Tulips and other members of liliaceae family are also not-great. Gerbera, rose, snapdragon and eustoma are on the aspca list for non toxic

I just assume every plant, except for maybe grass, is toxic to cats. I'm amazed that cats haven't gone extinct considering that so many plants can kill them.

How did these creatures ever survive in the wild

It's linked to in the piece above, but here is a direct link to the ASPCA's complete encyclopedia of plant toxicity for pets. www.aspca.org/pet-care/aspca-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

Lego Botanicals Series here is a great route. Lots of choices, less mess when it gets pawed off the table.

Funny you should mention it. My phalaenopsis has a mysterious bite-shaped piece missing from one leaf. ??? Bridget says she knows nothing about it. 😸

Nasturtiums! They're beautiful and safe for cats and also edible for peoples.

Roses are so fun that way. Their only defense against predators is the thorns. Don't know of any land animal they're toxic for.

i've never been happier that i'm terrible with plants and on the rare event that i get a bouquet it's always roses or sunflowers

Lilies belong to the most toxic flowers for kitties, but there´re also some other plants that they shouldn´t eat or chew on, you can google them.
