My expectation for this war was 'everyone loses,' but to be honest, if those terms hold and Iran gets to pull in $40bn a year from the Strait to fund their proxies and build their nuclear program - if this is the deal - then honestly the Iranian regime simply...won.

I don't think the money will be split 50-50, considering Iran will be running the toll extraction infrastructure and Oman's small size. It's not clear if Oman will even accept their portion of the money anyways. If it is split, it might be 75-25 instead of 50-50.

Oman is only "small" in a relative sense. Next to the superpowers, many African or LatAm states or its largest neighbours, Iran and KSA? Sure. Otherwise, it's roughly the same size as Poland, Vietnam, Italy or Germany!

P.S. And why exactly would they refuse?

I'm sure that Trump as the head of his "board of peace" will be more than willing to pocket Oman's share.

So Iran might end up with a cool 60 billion in cash a year.

In the meantime, it looks like Netanyahu & Israel’s hard right got what they wanted out of this - occupation of territory in sth Lebanon (& West Bank).

Even if Iran did pinky-swear to give up their HEU and not build a nuclear weapon, who would believe them? They have no reason not to, now, and no JCPOA to monitor them.

What if they offer Trump a quarter of the tolls?

it was a stupid war with a stupid plan and it was lost five weeks ago: when Iran closed the strait and started striking back with drones and missiles, and it turned out nothing had been prepared against that.

unbelievable, and also completely in character from Hegseth's OKW.

The regime/nation distinction is a perfectly reasonable one to make for a country ruled by a wholly unelected leadership, which throttles even the elections of subservient officials, and which kills its citizens wholesale to remain in power.

Oman also simply won

Iran and Oman, who share responsibility for their respective coastal waters that make up the narrow waterway, both win with an increase in charges to pass through, and Iran gets to keep its weapons development. Nice work by the Fraud Father. What else did we lose?

Trump and his family are 💯 getting fat kickbacks from Oman on the tolls, I am convinced. billions per year of hard currency straight into their pockets. Do we seriously think Trump is just letting Oman pocket 40 billion a year out of this and not get his cut?

I doubt that will completely be the status quo, but...yeah.

150+ dead kids is NOT winning, not to mention the other casualties and damage. :P

Victory and defeat in war are not measured in corpses. People make more people (Iran is not the Vatican) and $40bn p.a. can buy a lot of schools and infrastructure. By contrast the US may pretend that it's restored the status quo, but we'll all still be paying the bill.
