Halfway through this article arguing that San Francisco's new "tough love" mayor improved disorder and drug overdoses in the city, the author reveals that the improvement happened under the previous mayor. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/06/opinion/san-francisco-drugs-decriminalization-fentanyl.html

German Lopez used to write the Daily โ€” had to stop reading it because his arguments were so duplicitous.

Incredible op ed. Nearly every graf is either misleading or undermines what came before.

Same thing in New Orleans โ€” the claiming that excess state troops & national guard are responsible for the *already been declining* shooting rates

...happened under the previous mayor.....

but NOT because of anything the previous mayor did.

Kinda important to include that context.

The more important point is that it occurred *before* the present mayor. No matter what the causes were, the current mayor was not among them (unless the mayor was one of those stealing cars, and backed off the car-stealing because of new responsibilities).

I live in one of the SF neighborhoods, in fact at one of the actual corners in SF, most impacted by the fentanyl (and other drug) crisis. Lurie's programs are doing nothing but shifting people from one spot to another. No love, no care, nothing. Never trust @nytimes.com.

Hereโ€™s another graph showing things were getting better at least a year before Lurieโ€™s tenure started (which was Jan 2025). bsky.app/profile/jakemgrumbach.bsky.social/post/3miyxgugns22u

btw the SF locals opinion about the NYT's coverage is not favorable. Too many rah-rah pieces to expect objectivity.

I clicked through to learn more about the claim that the drop was in part due to fentanyl already killing more of the vulnerable population. The link is to another of his opinion pieces. That states the claim. With zero data. A vibes-based citation of a vibes-based claim. Vibeception. This guyโ€ฆ
