The famous Andor line is that "tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle." Here is a perfect example of that through malicious compliance: Idaho forced the city of Boise to remove its Pride flags. So the city painted rainbows everywhere else.

What right does a state government have to tell one of its cities that they can't fly a flag? Who was the disgustingly conservative judge who ruled over that court battle who let their personal hatred of trans people override their small-government conservatism?

the 1984 line about the boot stomping on human face forever contains the seeds of the same hope; the boot is trapped: it cannot ever quit stomping.

tyranny requires constant effort. forever.

and nothing lasts forever.

Cheers to Boise for bringing back the rainbow.
Shame on Idaho. I think there may be a civil rights violation here or freedom of speech or freedom of expression
Not sure...where's a lawyer when we need one?

What a pos website the Idaho Statesman is.

I turn off my ad blocker to read the article and it’s obliterated with pop ups.

The article references an issue at Ada schools where a teacher was asked to take down a sign that read “Everyone is Welcome Here.” That’s only a political message to you if your politics are centered in hate. To the rest of us, that’s basic human decency.

Along with the new Pride-themed flagpoles at City Hall, the downtown merchants have these banners up on light poles right now. I love the dancing Keith-Haring-But-Rounder figures.

My husband and I escaped the US for a two-day trip to Vancouver, BC during the 2025 inauguration. We stayed in the Davie gayborhood, and I noticed how the pride stuff was built into infrastructure. Storefront steps, awnings, tile walls. I noted that it was *integrated* and couldn't be "taken down".

Remember this: Try."

I've been mentally writing off the whole state of Idaho as a lost cause, but seeing Boise resist like this is heartening. It goes to show that even the "reddest" states are more purple than one might think.

The population of Idaho is 2 million, Boise which is very young and very liberal is almost 500k. That's 25% of the entire state - and Boise is absolutely booming with young people moving there.

I'm not sure if Idaho is going to stay red.

They don't care what most Americans actually want.

Deliberately. I’m going to see if i can track down a map of the USA coloured by popular vote proportion.

It’s purple. The whole map. Florida a redder purple than Cali, but it’s all purple

Lots of folk have been moving to Idaho bc it's cheaper. Most of those folk are RW fleeing from the West Coast, certainly the well off ones are, but a lot are also hippies & young folk, esp changing demographics in the urban areas. State gov can't stop them from coming so tyranny is fragile.

I'll never forget that it was at a pride event in Coeur d'Alene where the neo-Nazi hate group Patriot Front got arrested out of u-hauls for planning to start a riot.

You’d be surprised. It was the Mormon part of Idaho that prevented right-wing extremists from taking over the top levels of state government a few years ago.

Please never give up any region because the minorities hold no power. In fact, we need your support more than majority blue regions do and it’s HARD being a leftist in this state. We get knocked around by all sides. I’m glad you realized that it’s not a place to write off completely.

Always remember that the entire system is designed to manufacture consent and obfuscate dissent. It's easy to think these ideas are popular when the people behind them are also stopping you from hearing or seeing how unpopular they truly are. Everywhere.

As a blue dot in one of the reddest towns in idaho we are consistently 30-40% blue across the state. We expanded Medicaid and education funding by ballot initiative. We stopped bad immigration and education bills this session. Yeah we’re a mess, but we don’t give up the fight.

it is “confrontational” compliance

My mother's family is from Idaho; my uncle was a legislator for years. He drove a logging truck in N Idaho; very little tolerance for BS

Someone once told him schools were teaching kids to be gay

His reply: "Bullshit. If they are we should look into it as they are not doing a very good job of it"
