Why does the US honor confederate ranks? Like besides the whole traitor thing, Lee was a colonel. The confederacy made him a general but he never was one in the American military.

It's because the North started the conflict. They invaded the South. The latter were merely defending themselves. States had a right to secede from the Union back then, since the Constitution is silent on that.

I'm not gonna get into arguing over some right of secession stuff here.

None of that would explain why Lee is called a general when he never was a general in service of the United States.

Wrong on both counts.

The Confederacy attacked the Union first (Fort Sumpter). And the Constitution clearly states that membership of the Union is a federal matter.
