My latest for The New York Times: a look at the life & legacy of the late great D. Boon. Visited San Pedro to talk to the surviving Minutemen, Mike Watt and George Hurley, as they continue to carry forward the spirit of Boon and the band. I have yet to meet anyone from Pedro who doesn’t feel a deep connect with Watt, Hurley, and the Minutemen. And I’ve met lots of folks from Pedro, fine citizens all

I had many opportunities to see them when I lived in Chicago but never did. Maybe I’ll see them the next time they’re in town, I always said. One of my biggest musical regrets.

I saw one their last shows back in beautiful and exciting Norman, Oklahoma and still remember walking into the record shop a month later and the owner telling me he had died.

After the show ended a friend called me over to the stage, pulled back a rug, and Boon had broken the wood from pogoing so dang hard.

Thank you for that. What a beautiful article about some beautiful people & amazing musicians.
So sad he died so young, and the article still made me smile.
Their band was a lot of people’s lives.
Thank you again. ❤️

D. Boon always seemed so positive which is what distinguished him and The Minutemen from the rest of that early west coast punk scene and your piece captured that.

"[Watt] would always maintain his bond with Hurley in various projects, including the Bottle Conjurers, their current recording collaboration with Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets."

Great piece, Bob. - D. Boon is one of the few musicians gone too soon that I would love to know what music they'd be making now.

A lovely piece. Have had Mike stay with me a couple of times in Sheffield, UK in the last decade and try to see him whenever he is over touring. I don’t think there’s any stopping the guy. Long may he sail.
