(both sides of my family were big-time slaveowners.)

point being, I don't think it's helpful in beating back Lost Cause garbage to potentially let so many modern-day white southerners off the hook, so to speak, in terms of their own ancestry.

it's incredibly, incredibly rare to meet a white southerner who will openly admit their family owned slaves, even as (way fewer of them these days, thankfully!) decry the removal of Confederate monuments in the same breath, whining about "heritage, not hate."
