Bolin‘s childhood was marked by a mix of upper-middle-class stability and the harsh realities of early 20th-century racism. Her father, Gaius Bolin, was a trailblazing attorney, and she often spent time in his law office. She became captivated by his collection of leather-bound law books. /2

Inside those books, Bolin encountered horrific portrayals of racial violence, including photos of lynchings in the NAACP magazine, The Crisis. She later recalled that seeing such brutality as a protected child “forever scarred” her and fueled a determination to contribute to social justice. /3
