I'm embarrassed that I defended US journalism for way too long. This is inexcusable.

Another thing that irks me about this framing— why is ‘southern’ capitalized? It’s not a separate country. It’s a part of a whole. This isn’t South Sudan.

Regions are proper names - the South/"Southern", "Midwest"/Midwestern and New England/"New Englander" for example.

Same thing happens in other countries. Patagonia is a prominent one.

No, the difference is that the lands that Russia is annexing didn’t attack them first, and also that Israel isn’t formally annexing the territory.

The latter is also the eternal “war in the Middle East” or “crisis in the Middle East”

All to avoid reporting on the fact that all of this was started by Israel and the US.

Makes you really appreciate the real ones like El País in Spain, which refers to 'the United States' and Israel's war against Iran'

I think you had it more correct with your second point. The difference is that while Russia is considered an enemy of US, Israel is an ally. Propaganda demands we cover Israel’s war crimes while pointing at Russia’s. Racism has little to do with it: US doesn’t count Slavs as “white.”

The NYT is racist. The framing re Ukraine and Lebanon is horrific.

Cf ct this, from AP, which goes on and on about the illegality of Iran's actions while presenting Natostan's illegal sanctions as if they were the law itself.
